Things are falling into place

Things are finally starting to get done. It's amazing how some things are going either better or cheaper than expected. When I sent in the form that my social worker gave me to the state fire marshall, I got a call from them saying that the local county fire department would do this type of inspection for free. So I contacted the locals, and not only are they doing the inspection for free, they are going to give me a special smoke detector for hearing-impaired people. It has strobe lights that would wake up someone who can't hear the siren part of the detector. Free! Cool, huh?

So, the inspection was done yesterday. They had just a couple of very minor recommendations to make. Rick and I also went and got fingerprinted for the local police report clearance yesterday afternoon (he has to be printed, too, since he's over 18 now). I was surprised to find that there is no ink involved in the fingerprinting process these days--it's all done on a computer! There will be more fingerprinting in our future, because the feds want to do it, too, when I turn in the immigration forms that will allow me to bring an orphan into the country.

Two of my four letters of reference are back. My first choice as legal guardian has agreed to do the job. I'm still waiting on some other minor stuff, but the major thing I still have to live through is the health department's inspection of the house. They haven't called me back yet to schedule the inspection. (Do they already know the place is a mess and have given up before even starting with me?)

Although the paperwork is a pain, it's all running quite smoothly. Should I be knocking on wood?
