Letter #7 - Thinking for himself

The background here is that XiaoTian's previous note included the sentence "I don't like baba" after he said he loved mama and gege, because he automatically assumed because I was divorced that baba was a bad person. (I edited that out because I didn't want my former husband's feelings hurt.) So I explained to him that Rick's baba was actually still a good friend to us and, in fact, helps us a lot with things that mama can't do, like get Xiao Tian's bedroom furniture moved up to his bedroom. I also told him that it was important to form his own opinions about people and not decide to like or dislike someone based on whether mama likes that person or not, to think about how that person treats him and makes him feel inside. So now, what he wrote below should make more sense. (I also asked if he wanted to go with me on a tour of Beijing during our adoption trip, hence his statement about that.)

Dear mama,

It is important that I will have my own opinion, I will see if I like a person or not, like mama told me, from their smiling faces, I will be happy. I learned some ASL by myself already, thank you mama for teaching me more ASL and English. I've never been to Beijing before.

Yours
Xu xiaotian

Letter #6 - ASL and 26 letters

I'm so proud of this boy--the reason he says he knows "many ASL" is because when I sent him the care package, it included a child's coloring book called "Signs for Me" that showed pictures of different activities or objects, listed the English word, and then showed a picture of someone signing it. I got my friend David to write the Chinese words next to the English words. Xiao Tian has apparently just gone to town with learning his new language from this book. Can you imagine how fast he will soak it up once he's around someone actually signing to him?

When I wrote back, I told him he was doing very well if he has learned all 26 letters, because that is all we have, since English is not like Chinese where you must memorize thousands and thousands of characters. Now he just needs to learn to put the letters all together!
Looks like we need to get his hearing aids properly calibrated the minute we get off the plane.

Man, I wish I could promise him that his teacher is right and November is correct. It's just around the corner now, but I still haven't heard anything about my travel approval. Chomping at the bit here.....

Dear mama and gege:

Nihao! I am your son xiaotian. I can do many ASL now. I want to tell mama, I don't like the hearing aids, because once I wear them, they are too loud, I feel dizzy, and I cannot hear someone's calling. Right now, the teacher in SWI teaches me 26 letters. Will the keyboard have wubi, pinyin and English? I see what you meant about divorce. I love mama and gege. The teacher told me that me and mama will fly to US in November, is that right? Can mama teach me more English?

When mama comes to SWI, I will show you this poem, also I will tell you all my thinking. Let us trust in each other, I am a member of this family, I love you and respect you, you just like my real mama in my heart, maybe god lets us be together. I like our dogs, cat and the green lawn, also I like the bike mama prepared for me. Not only these things, but also I love you. I also want mama to teach me how to drive in the future, so when mama is older, I can drive you and our whole family for a trip.

Letter #4

Here's the latest letter from China:

Dear Mama and Gege,

I'd like to go to another country. Last time teacher Tang took me to the park to take many pictures. I want to keep studying when I arrive in US, because I like school, also I want to go to unversity. I think the keyboard which can change pinyin, wubi( which is the way to type in different chinese characters) and English will help a lot. I hope mama and gege are doing good, baba won't come? I don't know many English yet, we have a teacher Liu here knows English. I am learning to recite the Kisses in the wind, also I will do it in sign language.

Love you!

Agency Says Not Yet

Wrote to the adoption agency asking them if there was anything they wanted to share with me.

They said it is normal for the SWI to pull the child out of foster care (in this case, the residential schooling) prior to the parents' arrival, and sometimes they do it a couple of months ahead of time. She doesn't think that has any correlation to an imminent travel approval, and still feels my travel notice won't come for about another month, since they are just now getting travel notices for late June LIDs. My LID is early August.

So it might still actually be a ways off yet....but a gal can still hope, right?

Letter #3 - Going into Labor?

After getting that wonderful note on Saturday, I was told that Xiao Tian would be returning to the deaf school on Monday the 9th (he stays there for about a month at a time, apparently, and goes back to the SWI occasionally on weekends and for summers and holidays when school is closed). I had one last chance to send another e-mail. So I asked him if he knew of the Harry Potter books and would like me to get them in Chinese (I found a place that has them), and what kinds of foods he likes. This morning, I got the letter below.

I have to admit, I find it hysterically funny that my son seems to know more about where this adoption stands than I do! They are not sending him back to school, and my "source" tells me that when the SWI lets them stay home from school, it's because the pick-up by the parents is imminent. So it looks like I am going to China in the VERY near future.

Why don't *I* know anything about this? LOL!!

Dear Mama,

I can say "baba, mama"!! but "gege" I cannot pronounce it right, I am learning hard. I am waiting for the information at SWI, I was supposed to go back to school on 9th, but the workers told me mama is coming to take me to US!! I don't know about where I and family will live, which state, which province, which city, which town, I really want to know.

Dear mama, I saw the photo album and the letter, the workers of SWI keep them for me, They will give to me until you come to pick me up. We have deaf children at SWI,but at school all the children are deaf. Most of the children at SWI can do simple sign language, so there is no problem for us to communicate.

Dear mama, I am very happy for you to order Harry Porte, I like it very much. I want to know many question about America. Mama I like ham, egg, sandwich and vegetable salad, I like milk and juice also, I think I will like American food.Once I am in America, I want to keep studying, so I can know more about Amrica.

Dear Mama, I like computer, chat on line, I have a free QQ, I like playing games, watching American movies, riding a bike, running and swimming, free style, stroke, but not back stroke.

Please say hi to uncle Tongguang (David) and his wife aunt, say hi to gege.

Mama I really want to see you first when I open my eyes tomorrow morning.

I had a lot of fun during the moon cakes' day, I ate mooncake, coca and many good food, I didn't see rabbit and Chang e(the lady in the moon), but I only want to see mama and gege soon!!

May mama and gege good health!!

Letter #2 - with PICTURES!!!

I sent a note Thursday to my friend in Xuzhou who is occasionally in touch with Xiao Tian to wish him a Happy Autumn Festival on Friday, and this morning I got an e-mail back with a letter from him and pictures attached. Can I just tell you all that my heart is bursting right now? In the pictures below, he is saying "I Love Mama" in Chinese sign language. I have simply got to be the most blessed woman in the universe. Here's his letter:

Dear Mama,

How are you? I am Xu XiaoTian, I got the album and sign language book you sent to me, also I learned some sign language. I really want to meet you and gege (older brother), I am waiting for your coming, I hope you can come to pick me up soon, I want to have a happy and warm family.

May you always young, beautiful, good luck, health and happy forever!!

Love you

Your son
XiaoTian

All right, that darned travel approval can happen just any old day now. I was dealing with the impatience factor okay until now!
